What is MSME/Udyam Registration?
MSME (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) registration, now called Udyam Registration, is a government certification for small businesses. It provides various benefits including priority lending, subsidies, and protection against delayed payments.
Note: Udyam Registration is online, free, and based on self-declaration. No fee is charged by government.

Protection Against Delayed Payments (MSME Act, 2006)
- Buyer must pay within 45 days of acceptance (or agreed period)
- If delayed: Interest at 3 times RBI bank rate
- Buyer cannot claim deductions or set-off
- Facilitation Council can order payment
Step-by-Step Udyam Registration Process
- Visit Udyam Registration Portal (udyamregistration.gov.in)
- Click "For New Entrepreneurs who are not registered yet as MSME"
- Enter Aadhaar number and name (as per Aadhaar)
- Validate with OTP sent to registered mobile
- Fill PAN card details (PAN is mandatory)
- Enter business details: name, address, NIC code
- Provide investment and turnover figures
- Select bank account details (for subsidy transfer)
- Submit self-declaration
- Receive Udyam Registration Certificate (downloadable)
Important: Aadhaar and PAN are mandatory. GST is not mandatory but recommended. Fake registration is punishable.

- Bank account details (cancel cheque)
- Business address proof (optional, can be self-declared)
- NIC code for business activity
Registration for Existing Udyog Aadhaar Holders
Businesses registered under previous system (Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum) need to migrate to new Udyam Registration portal. Existing UAMs remain valid until March 31, 2021 (extended).

- No renewal required

Penalty for Non-Classification
While MSME registration is voluntary, businesses incorrectly claiming MSME benefits without meeting criteria face penalties and exclusion from schemes.
