What is Employee State Insurance (ESI)?

ESI is a self-financing social security scheme that provides medical, sickness, maternity, disability, and death benefits to employees. It is governed by the ESI Act, 1948 and administered by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

Eligibility and Applicability

ESI Contribution Rates

Key Point: Contribution rates are subject to change by the government. Employees earning up to ₹21,000 per month are covered under the ESI scheme.

Benefits Under ESI Scheme

Medical Benefit

Full medical care for self and family members at ESI hospitals/dispensaries

Sickness Benefit

70% of wages for up to 91 days per year (valid for 2 benefit periods)

Maternity Benefit

Full wages for 26 weeks (12 weeks for first two children)

Disability Benefit

90% of wages for temporary/permanent disability (industrial injuries)

Dependents' Benefit

Monthly pension to dependents after employee's death

Funeral Expenses

Up to ₹15,000 for funeral expenses

Confinement Expenses

For maternity-related expenses (up to specified limits)

Other Benefits

Medical bonus, vocational rehabilitation, physical rehabilitation

Important Note: ESI benefits are available from the date of coverage. Medical benefit is available to family members as well. Benefits may vary based on specific conditions.

Employer registers with ESIC online

IP number (Pehchan Card) generated

How to Claim ESI Benefits

Pro Tip: Always keep your ESI card and IP number handy. For cash benefits, claims must be submitted through the employer.
