Step-by-Step FIR Registration Process

Step 1: Visit the Police Station

Go to the nearest police station where the offence occurred. For Zero FIR, you can go to any police station. Meet the Station House Officer (SHO) or duty officer.

Timeline: As soon as possible

Step 2: Give Information to Police

Provide oral or written information about the offence. The police will reduce it to writing. Ensure all facts - date, time, location, accused description, witnesses - are included.

Timeline: 30-60 minutes

Step 3: Read and Sign the FIR

Police will read the recorded information to you. Confirm it is accurate. Sign the FIR after reading. You can request changes if any fact is incorrect.

Timeline: 15-30 minutes

Step 4: Police Register FIR in Register

Police will enter the FIR in the daily diary register. You will receive an FIR number and a copy of the FIR FREE of cost (as per Section 154 BNSS).

Timeline: Within 24 hours

Step 5: Obtain Free Copy of FIR

You are entitled to a free copy of the FIR immediately after registration. Keep this safe - it is your proof of filing complaint.

Timeline: Same day

Step 6: Police Begin Investigation

After FIR registration, police will start investigation - recording witness statements, collecting evidence, arresting accused if required.

Timeline: 60-90 days maximum
7

Step 7: Police File Charge Sheet or Final Report

After investigation, police file charge sheet (if evidence found) or final report (if false/unsubstantiated). You will be informed about the outcome.

Timeline: Within 60-90 days

What to Do If Police Refuses to Register FIR?

Remedy 1 - Complaint to Superintendent of Police: Under Section 154(3) BNSS, you can send complaint by post/email to SP/DCP. If satisfied, SP can order SHO to register FIR.
Remedy 2 - Application to Magistrate under Section 156(3) BNSS: File application before Magistrate. Magistrate can direct police to register FIR and investigate.
Remedy 3 - Private Complaint under Section 223 BNSS: File private complaint directly before Magistrate. Magistrate can take cognizance and order investigation.
Remedy 4 - Writ Petition in High Court: File writ petition seeking direction to register FIR. High Court can issue mandamus to police.
Remedy 5 - Police Helpline: Call 100, 112 or state police helpline numbers. Complaint can be escalated to higher officers.
